How to apply?

Application forms for the NMW Summer University 2013, in which you can also find further information, should be sent by e-mail to the following address: john.myers@sci-d.de until May 7th, 2013. Another round of applications will be accepted until June 5th, 2013 in case all places are not yet filled. A week after each deadline the decisions will be announced to the applicants.

Where is the place?

Thanks to the efforts of the people from SCI Catalunia, we are going to be at a very inspiring place that is deeply compatible with our SCI core values: http://www.masfranch.org.

Here a quote of what we heard about it so far:

Mas Franch is a very nice house in which a family and a group of volunteers live and produce ecological vegetables. They hold some trainings about permaculture, eco-construction and sustainability, so… the place is interesting itself, and they’re used to host people for trainings.

In addition, the place is in the north-west of Girona, where the peace caravan people visited a workcamp at the end of the peace caravan 2012 :)

Financial aspects?

All essential costs of the programme (including food, accommodation, and training) will be covered by SCI. 75% of international travel costs will be reimbursed for those not using planes, otherwise 60%. The travel reimbursement for those from other Continents is 80%.

Registration fee: 80 Euros for “old Europe”, 50 Euros for the rest (to be deducted from the travel reimbursement).

Additionally, there is a small fund available for those who for financial reasons cannot afford the required own contribution. Requests to this fund should be submitted on an extra paper together with the application form.

The SCI – Peace Messengers have announced a new online course from 13rd March till 10th April 2013.

You can find details and how to apply for it over on the SCI International website.

NEW DEADLINE for applications: 15 december 2012

 Athens, Greece

Around ninety years ago, Europe had mostly been a dream and only after having suffered the Second World War, the politicians of Europe formed tools for uniting the people of Europe instead of creating division or even wars: The council of Europe and what today is the European Union. Especially the latter not perfect or even democratic, they created a framework for countries to actively remove borders concerning culture, economy and travelling.

Now, the financial crisis, born out of greed and inequalities is seriously threatening to undermine the values of peace and respect for human rights that the European institutions were built for. We believe that our response to this great challenge should be “moreEurope, more caring for each other; not less”.

To strengthen this symbolically, the seminar is going to take place in Greece, one of the countries, most affected by the current financial countries.

For that reason we want to bring together 25 youth leaders from 10 different European countries for an international seminar, in order to focus on the origins of the European idea, analyse in depth the reasons why this dream is no longer appealing to many Europeans and is in danger of falling apart, and last but not least what we, as an international volunteer movement, can do to get the original vision of people in Europe living united back on track.

Taking the above concerns into consideration, we believe it is time to discuss in depth what we want and expect from a future Europe and make our views publicly known.

For more information regarding the participation and financial conditions, please check participants call

Application form can be found here & don’t forget to write your motivation letter.

Following partners have signed partnership agreements for the project and are eligible to participate: SCI Italy, SCI Germany, Utilapu (Hungary), SCI Hellas (Greece), SCI Romania, SCI Austria, Zavod Voluntariat (Slovenia), SCI Switzerland, VIABelgium, SCI Catalunya (Spain).

Participants from other YiA Program Countries can still apply, but their participation is subject of YiA approval.

The ‘Lead Peace’ – seminar in Stockholm over Easter was very refreshing and interesting. For those of you who would have liked to go but were not able to (there were lots at least three times more applications than places), here a short report about topics and some pictures:

First a short summary again of the cycle creating the four steps in practicing nonviolent communication – which was shortly introduced in the seminar again and practiced during the whole training:

1. Observation

Concentrate on specific behaviours instead of inferring what others intend. Be as specific as possible and only relate to what you observed oposed to judgements and evaluations. Judgements and evaluations can easily block your empathy and the empathy of others (instead it is more likely they will hear criticism) if not handled with care and awareness. View full article »

If you have need for Visa and thus need an answer as soon as possible – please get in contact with John Myers from SCI Germany as soon as possible, as time is short for those buereaucratic processes.

Okay, one short post – next week finally comes a longer one again – then on the wonderful topic of moral courage :)

For now, I want you to concentrate on faces – at least shortly – maybe your own but can be someone elses – now, do you think that something would look better if something was different? No, yes, maybe?

A lot of people would say yes. One reason for that – you guessed correctly, cultural violence – the ever visible pictures of people we label beautiful change our perception of ourselfs and others as well. There is a whole industry around that topic, from software for beautifying faces to completely rebuilding human anatomy from scratch (okay, missing some parts here and there)… View full article »
